Privacy Policy
Last updated: July 2026
Penny is a personal finance app that helps you see what's safe to spend, track bills and goals, and understand your money. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. We built Penny to be private by default: we don't sell your data, and we don't use it for advertising.
Information we collect
- Account information — your email address and name, and a securely hashed password, so you can sign in.
- Financial information you add — accounts, balances, transactions, recurring bills, budgets, goals, and debts you enter or that we import.
- Bank data (via Plaid) — if you connect a bank, our provider Plaid retrieves your account balances and transactions. You enter your bank credentials directly with Plaid/your bank — Penny never sees or stores your bank login.
- Device information — a push-notification token (if you enable notifications), your time zone, and, only when you submit a bug report, your device/browser and the page you were on, to help us reproduce the issue.
How we use your information
- To provide the app: calculate your safe-to-spend, forecasts, bills, and goals.
- To send notifications you opt into, such as bill reminders and low-balance alerts.
- To answer your questions in the in-app assistant (see below).
- To keep the service secure and to fix problems you report.
The in-app assistant
When you ask Penny a question, we send the relevant financial figures needed to answer it to our AI provider (OpenAI) to generate a response. This data is used to produce your answer and is not used to train their models. If you don't use the assistant, this doesn't apply.
How we share information
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with service providers who help us run Penny, under agreements that limit their use of it:
- Plaid — secure bank connections.
- OpenAI — powering the assistant, as described above.
- Our hosting provider — to run the app and store your data.
- Apple — to deliver push notifications you enable.
We may also disclose information if required by law.
Security
Your connection to Penny is encrypted (HTTPS). Passwords are stored only as secure hashes, and sensitive bank-connection tokens are encrypted at rest. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.
Keeping and deleting your data
We keep your information while your account is active. You can export or permanently delete your account and all associated data at any time from Settings → Account & data. Deleting your account removes your financial data and disconnects any linked banks.
Children
Penny is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we'll update the date above and, where appropriate, let you know in the app.
